The Origin Story Starts With a Kid, Not a Spreadsheet

There was no market research deck behind Fantasy In Black. There was a kid with an enormous imagination, and a dad who was paying close attention.

Founder Jay built the shop for his daughter first. She fills notebooks with stories and turns ordinary afternoons into full-blown quests, and Jay wanted her to see herself inside those worlds as the one running the show, not the sidekick who shows up for one scene and disappears.

The second reason is Jay himself. He has loved fantasy art for years: mermaids, superheroines, elves, the occasional horror piece thrown in for variety. Somewhere along the way, he noticed something a lot of people notice and rarely say out loud. Black women almost never get to be the one holding the spellbook.

So he did the most reasonable thing a person can do when they spot a gap in the universe. He picked up a drawing tablet and started closing it himself.
